{"id":3197,"date":"2013-12-14T23:21:09","date_gmt":"2013-12-15T04:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/?p=3197"},"modified":"2013-12-15T15:36:40","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T20:36:40","slug":"christmas-at-fenway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/2013\/12\/14\/christmas-at-fenway\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas at Fenway"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Saturday, December 14, 2013 &#8211; Fenway Park<\/h3>\n<h4>Christmas at Fenway<\/h4>\n<p>Ever since the Red Sox made Christmas at Fenway an invitation-only event after the chaos of the <a title=\"December 11, 2004\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redsoxdiehard.com\/diary\/2004\/page15.html#121104\" target=\"_self\">2004<\/a> free-for-all, I&#8217;ve never been selected in the lottery to attend.\u00a0 This year was no different, as I received my rejection letter during the week.\u00a0 That meant I&#8217;d have to take my chances in the dreaded Virtual Waiting Room online to try to get the 4-game Sox Pax that included Opening Day, a feat I haven&#8217;t had any luck with in the other Championship years.\u00a0 The other thing that was up in the air was the Fenway Park Yard Sale, which in previous years has been combined with Christmas at Fenway.\u00a0 The way it works, and who&#8217;s allowed to go, has been a little different every year, and this year I hadn&#8217;t seen any mention of it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3199\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3199\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3199\" title=\"Ice sculpture\" src=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ice.jpg\" alt=\"There was no danger of this ice sculpture melting!\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ice.jpg 350w, http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ice-150x112.jpg 150w, http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ice-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There was no danger of this ice sculpture melting!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was very lucky with the online sale and actually managed to get one of the Opening Day packs.\u00a0 I&#8217;m 45 rows back in the bleachers, but I don&#8217;t care &#8211; I get to go to my 14th consecutive opener, and see the World Champions raise the banner and get their rings!\u00a0 (About 15 minutes after my transaction was complete, I saw that package had sold out.)\u00a0 I was ready to move on with my day, when I saw a tweet just before noon that Red Sox Nation members and Season Ticket Holders could go to the Yard Sale at 1:30.\u00a0 (And that was only because Jere from <a title=\"A Red Sox Fan from Pinstripe Territory\" href=\"http:\/\/letsgosox.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Red Sox Fan from Pinstripe Territory<\/a> tweeted to ask them, not because they sent out emails or anything.\u00a0 How are we supposed to know?)\u00a0 So I hopped in the car and made it there just in time.\u00a0 There was a line of lottery winners who were waiting in line for a special wristband (they were calling wristband numbers when it was time for them to go to the ticket office), but those of us who were just there for the yard sale were able to go right in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3200\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3200\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3200\" title=\"Red Sox Christmas tree\" src=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tree.jpg\" alt=\"The Red Sox had decked the halls - and the Big Concourse - for the holidays.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I went to the Yard Sale area first, inside a function room on the first floor near Gate B.\u00a0 There didn&#8217;t seem to be as much stuff as previous years.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t see any Fenway Park bricks, which had always been a highlight for me.\u00a0 The other thing I like to stock up on at these Yard Sales is the publications, like old media guides and yearbooks.\u00a0 Those were just thrown randomly into giant boxes.\u00a0 I dug through a little, but the only thing I found interesting that I didn&#8217;t already have was a 2013 Umpire Media Guide.\u00a0 It has bios of the umpires, rule changes, and ground rules for every park.\u00a0 There are also sections titled Instant Replay, Rules Regarding Weather Conditions, and Elbow Pads that look intriguing.\u00a0 (Not sure if there&#8217;s anything in there about obstruction, though.)\u00a0 I bypassed the boxes of game used jerseys and banners that used to hang in the area around the park, because they&#8217;re all out of my price range.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3202\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3202\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3202\" title=\"3 trophies\" src=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/trophies.jpg\" alt=\"The World Series trophies from 2004, 2007, and 2013 were on display in the concourse.\" width=\"350\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/trophies.jpg 350w, http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/trophies-150x113.jpg 150w, http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/trophies-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The World Series trophies from 2004, 2007, and 2013 were on display in the concourse.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the back of the room was a line for autographs.\u00a0 I assume they rotated players there throughout the day, and Ryan Lavarnway was the one currently there.\u00a0 I had brought a picture of <a title=\"November 20, 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/2013\/11\/20\/the-trophy-tour-begins\/\" target=\"_self\">me with the 2013 trophy<\/a> which I&#8217;m trying to get as many as possible of the <a title=\"November 23, 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/2013\/11\/23\/nap-time\/\" target=\"_self\">players from that team<\/a> to sign, and was able to add Lavarnway&#8217;s autograph.\u00a0 Sam Horn and Bob Montgomery were also signing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3203\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3203\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3203\" title=\"Fenway snow\" src=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/snow.jpg\" alt=\"Snow was falling in Fenway Park as an ice rink was being constructed.\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/snow.jpg 350w, http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/snow-150x112.jpg 150w, http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/snow-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snow falls in Fenway Park as an ice rink is being constructed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next I headed out into the chilly Big Concourse to find the World Series trophies.\u00a0 First there was a World Series ice sculpture that I posed with.\u00a0 I also went up one of the ramps to see the field, where preparations were being made to build a hockey rink for college games next month.\u00a0 Temperatures were in the teens and snow was falling.\u00a0 It was certainly a different view!\u00a0 The trophy line took about 20 minutes, and while I was waiting I ended up buying some World Series logo wrapping paper from a roving Red Sox Foundation person.\u00a0 They were also raffling off prizes every half-hour.\u00a0 When I got to the front of the trophy line, I decided to pay tribute to bullpen cop Steve Horgan by posing in his familiar stance.\u00a0 (I cracked myself up even further when I got home and added a diving Torii Hunter to complete the picture.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3205\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3205\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3205\" title=\"Horganing\" src=\"http:\/\/redsoxdiehard.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/horganing.jpg\" alt=\"I got to pose with all 3 World Series trophies.
